Third MOOC, after #ITyPA then #CRIT101, I thought this one could bring me even more than what I had experienced so far. Project management was the theme, one never knows enough about it, who doesn’t need, at some point, at least basic knowledge in that field?
Truth be told, I started on the wrong foot right from the beginning. For fear of using my ‘regular’ e-mail address I used, as I usually do any time I create an account on any social platform, a secondary email address (Gmail and Yahoo! provide this feature, it’s a very powerful tool against spam). My name remaining the same, I didn’t see any harm to doing that.
By doing so I had failed to respect the code of conduct was the e-mail I received. Exclamation mark… (1)
Point d’exclamation… (2)
I kept a low profile from that moment on. My impression of the fellow wasn’t terrific but, unlike being at school where one has to bear with any teacher, my only contact with him was via his videos. Thank MOOCs, if only for that.
I had 2 objectives when I enrolled in that MOOC: its content AND how it played out. Certification in particular got my attention as I still needed to see anything relevant there. #ITyPA didn’t care to have anything even remotely near an exam, a certificate or a badge. There was an attempt at giving out badges during #CRIT101 on account of passed tests, I remained unconvinced.
I liked CANVAS, the plateform hosting the MOOC: numerous features such as possibilities to interact with students/teachers, a forum, to grade other students’ work (3), … If you’re familiar with Moodle, you wouldn’t have any problem using CANVAS as both are rather similar.
3 types of certifications: basic certification, advanced certification and project certification, the difficulty to pass each increasing accordingly.
I noticed that answers to some questions, for the basic certification, had better be strictly in accordance with the video – This being ‘basic’, each 3 to 5 minutes video was followed by a 6 questions MCQ – Every now and then it seemed to me that there were questions, less factual than hypothetical, which the answer might have been either one or another. I rapidly learned, if I wanted a good grade, to obediently answer like what had been said at some point in the video. So much for alternative point of views.
Also, concerning peer-reviewing, it seemed at first like a good idea but not that much if peers in question are given standards against which all assignments should be compared. Indeed it is one thing to give instructions, for instance what data should be present, it is another to go as far as giving examples of how a mindmap (for that matter) should look like. Even the dumbest reviewer gets the message: result should conform to standard, in content AND format. That’s no longer peer-reviewing, that’s subcontracting reviewing which is a wee bit different.
I blogged about my second assignment, posted a slightly blurred screenshot of a portion of the results and added a link to them, on my Google drive, recorded as public under the creative commons, why should I have concealed it? I didn’t tweet, didn’t post any link anywhere mind you. That’s my definition of open and teachers better adjust and learn what to ask and not expect that a mere code of conduct will offer much protection. What value do you think any certificate will bear otherwise?
The method how to teach is changing, so should how students are to be evaluated. It’s the 21st century people, there’s the internet, there’s Google and there are networks. Just because you’re on a diet doesn’t imply that all McDonalds in your town should shut down, right? I can’t even imagine what staff would be required to control and make sure nothing leaks. Besides, isn’t that one point of MOOCs that people help one another, as team members?
Others will tell me how that MOOC will end because I’m no longer in it / D’autres me diront comme ce MOOC finira parce que je n’y suis plus.
1 – WTF? I guess it didn’t help that I tweeted that I had ruffled the feathers of that MOOC main leader. Short fuse was how I qualified him.
2 – Quoi?
