Sorry HR people but if I have ever progressed all along my modest career I can’t really thank you. Nor can I thank any manager for having ever suggested me a new, better position (nor a better salary for that matter).
It’s not my intention to sound bitter, I have enough experience to know better and having realized this (only not early enough if you ask me) I know how to deal with that.
It so happened that I viewed a video yesterday where was debated the benefits enterprise social networks bring forth and how much a plus they represent vs traditional top-down style management. At one point the show host asked a very good question: what’s in there for the individual? What do I, as an employee, gain out of this sharing thing?
One guest gave, in my humble opinion, a sensible answer: contrary to what would happen in a traditional hierarchical structure where subordinate would have good chances to see his/her good idea ‘stolen’ by his immediate superior working in a more transparent organization would enhance his/her chances of being recognized hence valued.
The next question is then: do we work in a transparent organization? What, in turn, would any current organization as well as our immediate or above superiors gain out of shifting paradigm, becoming transparent and sharing more? Consequently isn’t this whole web 2.0 only wishful thinking at best since those who gained the most so far would not be certain to gain as much in changing?
The other question one would be better off asking oneself rather rapidly, after having started a new job for instance, is: Whatever organization I’m in isn’t there anybody else, besides me, taking any care of myself? Chances are there’s none.
Bitter, me? Realistic is more like it. This is the reason why I had, 2 days ago, an interview with the site manager. With an idea. Mine.
Amer, moi?
