This could be seen as a follow-up to a previous post where I was wondering ‘what we were waiting for‘. Not that I intend to repeat here what I wrote there and then but it seems to me that what I was calling for is/was actually already happening.
What I mean to say then was to build and to maintain an ESN inside the company. Whatever other external source, to me, looked like an insight of what said ESN should offer in terms of services, features and ergonomy.
The thing is a real, solid ESN, one that makes available all those features Yammer, Linkedin, Twitter or Facebook offer cannot be built inside unless you’re head of the company’s IT department. Furthermore waiting for top management to decide favorably one cannot a rather long time.
In an ideal world, in some ideal company (which I’m still on the lookout for by the way) no new file of whatever format would be created unless its content would be new and shared. This could only result from preliminary inductions, besides traditionnal ones (safety, quality, environment,…), where this particular point would be thoroughly explained.
In an ideal world, I’m not sure aforementioned ideal company would actually need an ESN as it would have implemented, with rules and good behaviours, what ESN aims at: communication and collaboration.

This is an interesting post – I too would like to find the ideal company. Your reference to the ESN reminded me of a webinar I participated in, and a blog post by the host of the webniar, on Personal Knowledge Management, which basically suggest that we need to create our own worlds of connected networking – http://www.jarche.com/key-posts/personal-knowledge-management/ . This discussion, and your post, are so relevant to us today.

Thanks for taking time to leave a comment. I appreciate the link you share. ‘Creating our own worlds’ is exactly the message I meant to convey. Companies, especially big ones, are not ‘wired’ for adopting solutions that could potentially challenge whatever organization they’re based upon. The thing is people continue to interact before, after and even during work. Rather interesting … challenges lie ahead of us.
