À la recherche d’un réseau social | Social network wanted

All good things must end one says, I didn’t expect this to happen so soon though. Why it’s only in march 2016 that our social network, Yammer, reactivated. In less than two years it reached over 2000 members and was steadily growing.

Toutes les bonnes choses doivent finir dit-on, seulement je ne m’attendais pas à ce que ça s’arrête si vite. Quand même ce n’est qu’en mars 2016 que nos réseau social, Yammer, reprit vie. En moins de deux années il a atteint plus de 2000 membres et continuait de grandir régulièrement.

End of this year beginning of next (don’t know precisely when) we are to part company with other branches of the enterprise which, in the process, take the social network along.

À la fin de cette année au début de la prochaine (j’ignore précisément quand) nous nous séparons d’autres branches de la compagnie qui, dans le process, emporte le réseau social avec elles.

So, Yammer is over, long live [insert here what ever will replace it]. Several questions remain : should we create another social network, from scratch ? Why, what for ? Should we even use the same platform ? If not Yammer, what other network : Asana, Slack, Whaller, Diaspora, Path, Sharepoint even ?

Donc Yammer est mort, vive [insérer ici ce qui le remplacera]. Plusieurs questions subsistent : devrions-nous créer une autre réseau social, à partir de rien ? Pourquoi, pour quoi ? Devrions-nous même utiliser la même plateforme ? Sinon Yammer, quel autre réseau : Asana, Slack, Whaller, Diaspora, Path ou même Sharepoint ?

Several factors are to be taken into account one of which is paramount : the ability to host the platform which would indeed solve the confidentiality issue, this matter alone cannot be taken lighly.

Plusieurs facteurs doivent être considérés dont l’un est primordial : la possibilité d’héberger la plateforme ce qui résoudrait ainsi la question de la confidentialité, ce problème à lui seul ne peut être pris à la légère.

Besides Sharepoint I only see Diaspora with the possibility to host the application. Truth be told Sharepoint has the inside track as it intregrates well with all other Microsoft products : Outlook, Excel and – the one app I have a soft spot for – Access.

En plus de Sharepoint je ne vois que Diaspora qui offre la possibilité d’être hébergé. À dire vrai Sharepoint est le favori du fait qu’il s’intègre bien aux autres produits Microsoft : Outlook, Excel et – l’application pour laquelle j’ai un faible – Access.

I don’t wish to turn this post into an advert for Microsoft¹ but in two years of Yammer I’ve seen, what, 20 persons max that were truly commited to make the community live. People simply don’t know what to make of social networks, least of which one that would force them to chose between their beloved Outlook and posting, sharing, contributing,…

Je ne souhaite transformer ce billet en une publicité pour Microsoft¹ mais en deux années de Yammer j’ai vu, quoi, 20 personnes au plus vraiment dédiées à faire vivre la communauté. Les gens ne savent tout simplement pas quoi faire des réseaux sociaux, encore moins une qui les forcerait à choisir entre leur Outlook chéri et poster, partager, contribuer,…

With Sharepoint I fairly know how to talk people into changing their habits : I can see myself instructing them the advantage of posting on Sharepoint and make all recipients receive notifications versus what they normally do : emailing (force feeding is more like it) each and everyone of said recipients. Where is the information in the latter case, where could one retrieve it any time later, how about the overall storage capacity required, …

Avec Sharepoint je vois bien comment convaincre les gens de changer leurs habitudes : Je me vois les instruire des avantages de poster sur Sharepoint et faire que tous les récipiendaires reçoivent des notifications par rapport à ce qu’ils font d’habitude : emailer (gaver serait plus exact) chacun desdits récipiendaires. Où est l’information dans le deuxième cas, où pourrait-on la retrouver n’importe quand, plus tard, quant à la capacité de stockage totale requise,…

The learning curve would definitely look less dramatic with Sharepoint whereas with any other social network it would heavily depend upon the ability of management to learn how to use yet another application on top of changing habits.

L’apprentissage paraîtrait vraiment moins rude avec Sharepoint tandis qu’avec n’importe quel autre réseau social cela dépendrait beaucoup de la capacité qu’aurait le management d’apprendre comment utiliser encore une autre application en plus de changer des habitudes.

For sure I’ll have a twinge of regret when I leave Yammer. After all I created it almost 10 years ago, from scratch. I’m rather proud of what that baby has become, I am truly pleased that others took time to make it grow and shape up a form of community. Best of luck to them for the future.

Évidemment j’aurai un pincement au cœur quand je quitterai Yammer. Après tout je l’ai créé il y a presque 10 ans, à partir de rien. Je suis plutôt fier de ce que ce bébé est devenu, j’ai du plaisir à voir que d’autres ont consacré du temps pour le faire grandir et former une sorte de communauté. Bonne chance à eux pour le futur.

Bis Repetita Placent

I’m pretty confident I wrote, in the past, about us (in the company) using a social media : Yammer. Boy! the post dates from 4 years ago, how time flies ! At that time I was considering using one as an external alternative solution to a non-existent one within.

Je suis quasiment sûr d’avoir écrit, dans le passé, à propos de notre utilisation (au sein de l’entreprise) d’un medium social : Yammer. Punaise! the billet date d’il y a 4 ans, comme le temps file! J’envisageais d’en utiliser un en tant que solution externe alternative à une qui n’existait pas en interne

I had created an account on Yammer (the image above reflects rather well what the layout looks like) Sept 10, 2008 (was in Finland back then) and was counting on some viral magic to spread the good word. Truth be told : the response didn’t meet my expectations ^_^

J’avais créé un compte sur Yammer (l’image ci-dessus reflète assez bien à quoi ressemble l’interface) en Septembre 2008 (j’étais en Finlande alors) et je comptais sur une sorte de magie virale pour répandre la bonne parole. Honnêtement : la réponse n’a pas été à la hauteur des attentes ^_^

Long story short : after a few months of existence Yammer was no longer accessible from within the company network. End of story I.

Pour faire court : après quelques mois d’existence Yammer devint inaccessible depuis le réseau d’entreprise. Fin de l’histoire I.

Beginning of story II : a couple of weeks ago I received notification of a publication having been posted on Yammer. Like a bip coming from a distant satellite one believed long dead.

Début de l’histoire II : il y a quelques semaines je reçu une alerte que quelque chose venait d’être publié sur Yammer. Comme un signal venant d’un satellite lointain qu’on croyait mort depuis longtemps.

Funny enough I’m not the only one having received such notification since quite a few had the same reaction as I had : there’s life on Mars after all ?

Ce qui est marrant est que je n’ai pas été le seul à recevoir une telle alerte puisqu’on a été quelques-uns à réagir de manière similaire : y-a-t-il de la vie sur Mars après tout ?

Sadly (strangely ?) enough, once past the first exchanges, it appeared (to me at least) that one didn’t have a clearer idea of what to do with a social media now than we had 5-6 years ago. Back then it was sort of new, Twitter and Facebook were still in infancy, but now ?

Assez tristement (étrangement ?), une fois passés les premiers échanges, il est apparu (en tous cas à moi) qu’on n’avait pas une idée plus claire de quoi faire avec un médium social maintenant qu’on en avait il y a 5-6 ans. C’était relativement nouveau alors, Twitter et Facebook étaient encore en enfance, mais maintenant ?

Yet again were exchanged opinions and considerations but nothing substantiated by any true experience. After so many years I would have thought that, particularly from experts in that very field, a real direction would be taken, a common understanding of what a social media is for (vs what it’s not good at) would have been laid out.

Encore une fois des opinions et des considérations ont été échangées mais rien qu’étayait une vraie expérience. Après tant d’années je m’étais attendu, en particulier de la part d’experts du domaine même, à ce qu’une vraie direction soit prise, qu’une véritable compréhension de ce pour quoi est fait un médium social (vs ce pour quoi il n’est pas bon) nous aurait été exposée.

Sure there are new apps now, the world has continued spinning we know that, and it’s a fair possibility that most recent applications might even be better, in more than one way, than what we ‘played’ with 5-6 years ago. What is it worth mentioning Slack for instance, launched in 2013, if only to prove that point ?

Bien sûr qu’il y a de nouvelles applications maintenant, nous savons que le monde n’a pas cessé de tourné, et il est même tout à fait possible que les plus récentes d’entre elles soient meilleures, par plus d’une fonction, que ce avec quoi nous ‘jouions’ il y a 5-6 ans. Quelle est peut-être la raison de mentionner Slack par exemple, lancé en 2013, si ce n’est pour prouver cela ?

Slowly but steadily we’ve managed to expand the number of our tools as well as upgrade the ones we had. We’re still trailing behind though and, this might be news to anyone reading this, we will continue to do so. One’d better get accustomed to the fact that it is not in most companies’ best interest to keep up with last equipments, most recent updates¹, as it’s time and money consuming.

Lentement mais sûrement nous avons réussi à étendre le nombre de nos outils en plus de mettre à jour ceux que nous avions déjà. Nous restons quand même à la traîne pourtant et, ceci pourrait être une info pour certains qui liraient ces lignes, nous continuerons à l’être. Il vaut mieux s’accommoder du fait que ce n’est pas dans l’intérêt de la plupart des entreprises d’avoir les équipements les plus récents, les dernières mises à jour¹, parce que cela représente du temps et de l’argent.

Better make the best of what we already have and, let me assure you, there is a lot to do : We use sharepoints (2010, didn’t I write we were trailing behind ?), still nobody I know use them to the full extent of their capabilities, they don’t even know RSS stands for let alone what they could achieve using them…

Mieux vaut faire au mieux avec ce que l’on a déjà et, croyez-moi il y a de quoi faire : Nous utilisons des Sharepoints (2010, est-ce que je n’ai pas écrit que nous étions à la traîne ?), pourtant je ne connais personne qui les utilisent dans l’intégralité de leurs capacités, ils ignorent même ce que RSS signifie, quant à savoir ce qu’ils pourraient en faire …

Better make the best of what we already have so that, should the occasion arise that a function would be particularly needed but only existed in latest versions, at least we’d have a solid ground to stand on to demand it. I don’t see any other way to work things around, at least it would beat barely engaging and whining.

Mieux vaut faire au mieux avec ce que l’on a déjà pour que, si l’occasion se présentait qu’une fonction soit particulièrement nécessaire mais qu’elle existe seulement dans les dernières versions, au moins nous aurions une base solide sur laquelle établir notre demande. Je ne vois aucune autre façon de procéder pour faire évoluer les choses, en tous cas ça vaut mieux que s’engager du bout des lèvres et geindre.

After so many years we have our social network, at last; wish us luck ^_^
