À la recherche d’un réseau social | Social network wanted

All good things must end one says, I didn’t expect this to happen so soon though. Why it’s only in march 2016 that our social network, Yammer, reactivated. In less than two years it reached over 2000 members and was steadily growing.

Toutes les bonnes choses doivent finir dit-on, seulement je ne m’attendais pas à ce que ça s’arrête si vite. Quand même ce n’est qu’en mars 2016 que nos réseau social, Yammer, reprit vie. En moins de deux années il a atteint plus de 2000 membres et continuait de grandir régulièrement.

End of this year beginning of next (don’t know precisely when) we are to part company with other branches of the enterprise which, in the process, take the social network along.

À la fin de cette année au début de la prochaine (j’ignore précisément quand) nous nous séparons d’autres branches de la compagnie qui, dans le process, emporte le réseau social avec elles.

So, Yammer is over, long live [insert here what ever will replace it]. Several questions remain : should we create another social network, from scratch ? Why, what for ? Should we even use the same platform ? If not Yammer, what other network : Asana, Slack, Whaller, Diaspora, Path, Sharepoint even ?

Donc Yammer est mort, vive [insérer ici ce qui le remplacera]. Plusieurs questions subsistent : devrions-nous créer une autre réseau social, à partir de rien ? Pourquoi, pour quoi ? Devrions-nous même utiliser la même plateforme ? Sinon Yammer, quel autre réseau : Asana, Slack, Whaller, Diaspora, Path ou même Sharepoint ?

Several factors are to be taken into account one of which is paramount : the ability to host the platform which would indeed solve the confidentiality issue, this matter alone cannot be taken lighly.

Plusieurs facteurs doivent être considérés dont l’un est primordial : la possibilité d’héberger la plateforme ce qui résoudrait ainsi la question de la confidentialité, ce problème à lui seul ne peut être pris à la légère.

Besides Sharepoint I only see Diaspora with the possibility to host the application. Truth be told Sharepoint has the inside track as it intregrates well with all other Microsoft products : Outlook, Excel and – the one app I have a soft spot for – Access.

En plus de Sharepoint je ne vois que Diaspora qui offre la possibilité d’être hébergé. À dire vrai Sharepoint est le favori du fait qu’il s’intègre bien aux autres produits Microsoft : Outlook, Excel et – l’application pour laquelle j’ai un faible – Access.

I don’t wish to turn this post into an advert for Microsoft¹ but in two years of Yammer I’ve seen, what, 20 persons max that were truly commited to make the community live. People simply don’t know what to make of social networks, least of which one that would force them to chose between their beloved Outlook and posting, sharing, contributing,…

Je ne souhaite transformer ce billet en une publicité pour Microsoft¹ mais en deux années de Yammer j’ai vu, quoi, 20 personnes au plus vraiment dédiées à faire vivre la communauté. Les gens ne savent tout simplement pas quoi faire des réseaux sociaux, encore moins une qui les forcerait à choisir entre leur Outlook chéri et poster, partager, contribuer,…

With Sharepoint I fairly know how to talk people into changing their habits : I can see myself instructing them the advantage of posting on Sharepoint and make all recipients receive notifications versus what they normally do : emailing (force feeding is more like it) each and everyone of said recipients. Where is the information in the latter case, where could one retrieve it any time later, how about the overall storage capacity required, …

Avec Sharepoint je vois bien comment convaincre les gens de changer leurs habitudes : Je me vois les instruire des avantages de poster sur Sharepoint et faire que tous les récipiendaires reçoivent des notifications par rapport à ce qu’ils font d’habitude : emailer (gaver serait plus exact) chacun desdits récipiendaires. Où est l’information dans le deuxième cas, où pourrait-on la retrouver n’importe quand, plus tard, quant à la capacité de stockage totale requise,…

The learning curve would definitely look less dramatic with Sharepoint whereas with any other social network it would heavily depend upon the ability of management to learn how to use yet another application on top of changing habits.

L’apprentissage paraîtrait vraiment moins rude avec Sharepoint tandis qu’avec n’importe quel autre réseau social cela dépendrait beaucoup de la capacité qu’aurait le management d’apprendre comment utiliser encore une autre application en plus de changer des habitudes.

For sure I’ll have a twinge of regret when I leave Yammer. After all I created it almost 10 years ago, from scratch. I’m rather proud of what that baby has become, I am truly pleased that others took time to make it grow and shape up a form of community. Best of luck to them for the future.

Évidemment j’aurai un pincement au cœur quand je quitterai Yammer. Après tout je l’ai créé il y a presque 10 ans, à partir de rien. Je suis plutôt fier de ce que ce bébé est devenu, j’ai du plaisir à voir que d’autres ont consacré du temps pour le faire grandir et former une sorte de communauté. Bonne chance à eux pour le futur.

A little success, at last, I’m taking credit for | Un petit succès, enfin, que je m’attribue

my place, the day was great this sunday

I‘m due to leave this job and start another one in the coming couple of months. My hierarchy has been informed about it so it’s OK to share this with whomever comes across this blog and reads this post. My change of position not only offers me new opportunities, possibilities to evolve and learn new ropes but also solves a couple of issues one of which being : not having to contemplate being transfered to Paris once my assignment on this project would have been over.

Je quitte ce boulot et en commence un autre dans les quelques mois à venir. Ma hiérarchie en a été informée aussi puis-je partager ceci avec quiconque trouve ce blog et lit ce billet. Mon changement de situation non seulement m’offre des nouvelles opportunités, des possibilités d’évoluer et d’apprendre à nouveau mais résoud quelques problèmes dont l’un : ne pas avoir à considérer être transféré à Paris une fois que mon affectation à ce projet aurait été terminée.

I’ll take more time, maybe, in a more or less near future, to draw up a more comprehensive appraisal of what 3 years on this project brought me¹, for the time being I just have one coming to mind : implementing a Sharepoint©®™ ² between several entities which interests may be opposite (between a subcontractor, the customer, us and various entities working with the 3 of us).

Je prendrai plus de temps, peut être, dans un futur plus ou moins proche, pour tirer un bilan plus exhaustif de ce que ces 3 années sur ce projet m’auront apporté¹, pour l’instant j’en qu’un à me venir à l’esprit : mettre en place un Sharepoint©®™ ² entre plusieurs entités dont les intérêts pourraient diverger (entre un sous-traitant, le client, nous et quelques autres entités entre nous 3).

So far, over a period of about 10 years, I honestly failed at inplementing a simple wiki, or a tablet or any other things I believed would have been interesting for everybody to use – in addition to supplementing work with some fun – and it took a rather challenging issue to actually give me the opportunity to suggest something necessitating, suprisingly enough, that partners whose interests would be adverse work together.

Jusqu’à maintenant, sur une période de presque 10 ans, je ne suis pas parvenu à mettre en place un simple wiki, ou une tablette ou d’autres choses qui je pensais auraient pu être intéressantes pour tous (en plus d’ajouter un peu de ‘fun’ au travail) et il a fallu un problème plutôt difficile pour de fait me donner la possibilité de suggérer quelque chose nécessitant, c’est assez surprenant, que des partenaires dont les intérêts divergeraient travaillent ensemble.

In a nutshell Sharepoint solves several problems : it gives everyone the possibility to be readily informed of informations once these are made available on the platform. By contract the subcontractor is bound to notify bodies any time he does something. Achieving this is hard enough within any organization – anybody working in an enterprise knows that (and using emails is not helping) – so when it comes to several organizations, using incompatible systems, fearing external interferences, ….

En résumé Sharepoint résout plusieurs problèmes : il donne la possibilité à tous d’être facilement informés une fois que cette information est disponible sur la plateforme. Par contrat le sous-traitant doit notifier les entités chaque fois qu’il fait quelque chose. Y parvenir est déjà assez difficile à l’intérieur des organisations – n’importe qui travaillant en entreprise le sait (et l’email n’aide pas) – alors lorsqu’il s’agit de plusieurs organisations, utilisant des systèmes incompatibles, craignant des ingérences externes, ….

• Subcontractor feeding, says its contract, the platform will ‘live’ as it’ll be constantly updated. This solves the who-the-hell-is-in-charge-of-feeding-this-damn-thing issue.
• Anything else follows really : the involvement, the exchanges,…
• This also solves the who-has-the-info as it’s become where-i-it : on the platform silly.
• Finally, if used properly, what’s-the-latest-info is no longer anybody’s nightmare to find as it is, once again, on the platform.

• Le sous-traitant étant la source, par contrat, la plateforme ‘vivra’ puisqu’elle sera constamment mise à jour. Ceci résout le souci du qui-est-en-charge-de-nourrir-ce-p***n-de-truc.
• Le reste en découle en fait : l’implication, les échanges,…
• Ceci résout the problème du qui-a-l’info puisque c’est devenu où-c’est : sur la plateforme ducon.
• Enfin, à la condition d’être bien utilisé, le problème de quelle-est-la-dernière-info n’est plus un cauchemar pour tout un chacun, elle est forcément sur la plateforme.

Truth be told, the alternative proposal was so pathetically poor anything even marginally technological could only be better.

À vrai dire, le proposition alternative était tellement pathétique que n’importe quoi même un peu technologique ne pouvait  qu’être meilleur.

Maybe this is the recipe for successfully implementing solutions : purposely narrow down to 2 proposals, a first one so bad any other concept would easily win over.

Peut-être est-ce cela la recette pour mener à bien des solutions : réduire à dessein à 2 propositions, la première étant si mauvaise que n’importe quel autre concept convaincrait facilement.

I’m only half joking / Je plaisante à moitié.

¹ : understand, allowed me to implement (in case one would wonder about the rather passive connotation the wording may sound) / comprendre, m’a permis de mettre en place (au cas où on s’interrogerait sur la connotation plus passive que la phrase aurait)

Necessary adjustments to constraints | Les ajustements nécessaires aux contraintes

I’ll start this post with following video “wikis in plain english” which I can only urge one to view.

Je commencerai ce billet avec la vidéo ci-dessus¹ “wikis en anglais de base” que je ne peux que recommander.

“Email is simply not good at coordinating and organizing a group input. The important information is scattered across everyone’s inbox.” I’ll stopped right there – the whole purpose of the video is to ‘sell’ the idea that a wiki is more appropriate over using email² – I tried to implement a wiki, it didn’t work. People are just not ready for that big a jump (in sharing, in being transparent, in opening up, etc.).

“L’email est simplement pas bon pour coordonner et organiser une information qui concerne tout un groupe. L’information importante est dispersée dans les boîtes de chacun.” Je m’arrêterai là – tout le but de cette vidéo est de ‘vendre’ l’idée qu’un wiki est plus approprié que d’utiliser l’email² – J’ai essayé d’utiliser un wiki, ça n’a pas marché. Les gens ne sont simplement par prêts pour un tel saut (à partager, à être plus transparents, à s’ouvrir, etc.).

Some who read this blog might believe I’m about to contradict myself, that I’m about to become a proponent of email. I’m not, especially if one realizes that 1/ an email reader such as Outlook® offers more than just … email 2/ a shared email is a small but important step towards sharing, right?

Certains qui lisent ce blog pourrait croire que je suis sur le point de me contredire, que je suis sur le point de devenir un partisan de l’email. Tel n’est pas le cas, surtout lorsqu’on réalise que 1/ un lecteur d’email tel que Outlook© offre plus que juste … l’email 2/ un email partagé est un petit mais important pas vers le partage, n’est-ce pas?

Take Outlook® : email of course, but also tasks, post-it (which, in my humble opinion, is a feature one could really profit from is used properly especially in a collaborative environment) and calendar. Over the past years I have noticed that this particular fonction was more and more used (I even saw one using it as a … task manager ^_^).

Prenez Outlook© : l’email bien sûr, mais aussi tâches, post-it (qui, à mon humble avis, est une caractéristique dont on pourrait réellement bénéficier à la condition d’être bien utilisée en particulier dans un environnement collaboratif) et calendrier. Ces dernières années j’ai noté que cette fonctioin spécifique était utilisée de plus en plus couramment (j’ai même vu quelqu’un l’utiliser en tant que … gestionnaire de tâches ^_^).

In my trade we’re facing a particular difficulty which we were already subjected to in my last assignment in Finland, though not in that proportion: notifications of surveillance bodies. 5-6 of them (plus us and the client), and, of course, each wanting to witness different points³.

Dans mon business nous faisons face à une difficulté particulière à laquelle nous étions déjà soumis dans ma dernière mission en Finlande, quoique pas dans les mêmes proportions : la notification aux entités de surveillance. 5 à 6 (en plus de nous-même et du client), et, bien sûr, chacun voulant assister à des points³ différents.

Guess what tool is being used? Email of course – hence my having started this post with above video – whereas Calendar would definitely do a better job… except that all 5, 6, 7 of us do not have our emails/calendars hosted on same system.

Devinez quel outil est utilisé ? L’email bien sûr – d’où la vidéo ci dessus en début de ce billet – tandis que calendrier conviendrait mieux… sauf que nous 5, 6, 7 n’avons pas nos emails/calendriers hébergés sur le même système.

Not all is lost though. End of last year I’ve been appointed admin of a Sharepoint®. Only recently I realized that I could synch Sharepoint® calendar with Outlook®. Next step: making our Sharepoint® externally accessible.

Tout n’est pas perdu cependant. Fin de l’an dernier j’ai été désigné admin d’un Sharepoint©. Récemment j’ai réalisé qu’il était possible de synchroniser le calendrier Sharepoint© avec Outlook©. Prochaine étape : rendre notre Sharepoint© accessible depuis l’extérieur.

Because companies IT departments simply block such applications as Facebook, Twitter. Still, how simpler could things be with, say, Google calendar.

Parce que les entreprises DSI bloquent simplement des applications telles que Facebook ou Twitter. Pourtant, combien plus simples pourraient être les choses avec, par exemple, Google calendar.

² : something I’m convinced of / ce dont je suis convaincu.

³ : welding, various tests, etc. / soudage, différents tests, etc.
