It so happened that I recently acquired a new home. Until then, since I changed job, in June 2014, and moved to Burgundy (from Normandy), I had been renting a place something I was getting really tired of.
Il se trouve que je viens d’acquérir, récemment, un logement. Jusque là, depuis que j’ai changé de travail, en Juin 2014, et déménagé en Bourgogne (venant de Normandie), j’étais en location ce dont je commençais à vraiment me lasser.
We officially signed papers last week. Were present, the sellers, myself, a person from the real estate agency and 2 notaries (each one representing each party).
Nous avons officiellement signé les papiers semaine dernière. Étaient présents, les vendeurs, moi-même, une personne de l’agence immobilière et 2 notaires (chacun représentant chaque partie).
We spent a whole hour reading again papers both parties had manually signed, 3 months ago, as a preliminary purchase agreement at the real estate agency. Truth be told one of the notaries read out loud aforementioned papers that had been scanned as pdf documents and were displayed by a beamer on a screen.
Nous avons passé une heure entière à lire à nouveau des papiers que les deux parties avaient signé manuellement, il y a 3 mois, en tant que compromis d’achat à l’agence immobilière. En vérité un des notaires lut à haute voix lesdits papiers qui avaient été scannés en documents pdf et étaient projetés depuis un vidéoprojecteur sur un écran.
At the end of it all both parties were asked to electronically sign, only once!
À la fin on a demandé aux deux parties de signer électroniquement, juste une fois !
I remember the first time I purchased an apartment, over 10 years ago. No beamer then but fewer papers to sign and just an official bank cheque.
Je me rappelle quand j’ai acheté mon premier appartement, il y a un peu plus de 10 ans. Pas de vidéoprojecteur mais bien moins de papiers à signer et juste un chèque de banque.
What I witnessed this time around fails to convince me we progressed all much since then.
Ce à quoi j’ai assisté cette fois ci ne me convainc pas que nous avons progressé tant que ça depuis.

I agree with you. It is almost the same long process as before but in different style. Perhaps in some areas, like this, still has a long process. But in communication technology, for instance, it is fast and effective. It connects people all over the world. I still believe that the invention and advancement in technologies for the past 10 years is quite amazing.

I do agree with you Liza (am I glad to see you on this platform by the way) it’s just that in many field the problem seems to be people having difficulties to adjust to change hence multiplication of layers. Is it a question of time until a new generation, better acquainted with new technologies, takes over ? Truth be told in my example I was the youngest in the notary’s office … at 50 😉

Thanks, I should move shortly (I’ve waited for 3 months already, 2 to 3 more weeks won’t pose me a problem).
Concerning this post, I only use this as an example of many other similar situations (most of them at work) where nowadays technologies are mostly added to existing processes, not taking them over.
