It crossed my mind the other day, while having an interview with site’s boss. Was my work related to some knowledge I had acquired in the last, 5-10 years? Was I still working in the field I had been trained for?
Fortunately, for me, I can safely answer YES to the first question and as fortunately NO to the second. I can even say this: I would not have been given the opportunity to apply for current position had not had learned how to create and manage databases. I would be either bored to death or unemployed by now if I would be working in my original field of trade.
The next question is: Am I getting myself ready for the next position? Am I acquiring new knowledge, am I making myself acquainted with new techniques and technologies? As I don’t know what that new position will be I can only speculate that what I do currently learn will do one way or the other.
Another question would be: is my company involved in my training, one way or the other? Not that I have noticed anything in the last… 7, 8 years; but perhaps, unbeknown to me I have ^_^.
Final question is for whomever would read this (please feel free to leave a comment but it is in no way an obligation): How would you answer all above questions?

This is an interesting discussion – and reminds me of what my oldest son said after he graduated last year from University in Industrial Engineering – “our professors told us that what they are teaching us now (in 2009-2010) will be obsolete in 5 years or more, but they (the professors) are teaching us [students] how to ‘think’.”
It will be interesting though if our children (young people in their 20’s and younger) will be working in fields that they go to University for. Time will tell!

Kudos to teachers of your son for their honesty. I don’t think mine would have said the same. But I’m 48 and things were not changing then half as rapidly as they are now, let alone as fast as I see them changing in the future.
Thanks for taking time to leave a comment.

Yes surprising that he said that I was impressed too! I’m also 48, and I also think times are changing more rapidly than they did when I was my son’s age. I’m almost afraid to think of what times will be like 20 years from now. However, one day at a time. Thanks always for your terrific, thought provoking posts!
